Blog #3- "Dumbest Generation"

I guess according to this Mark Bauerlein guy, I'm part of the dumbest generation ever.  I think that this guy is kind of mad that when he was growing up he didn't have all this technology.  Yes I do agree that we use all of these devices a lot but I don't think that makes up dumb.  I would say that my generation is lazy instead of dumb.  I will agree that there are dumb people in my generation (like that Miss USA girl), but that can be said for every generation, there will always be dumb people around.  My generation focuses our smarts on different things then when Mark Bauerlein was young, so he thinks that makes us dumb?  We laugh at older people because they don't know how to use a lot of these new devices, but we don't go and call them the dumbest generation.  Like I said earlier a lot of people in my generation are lazy but that doesn't mean that they are dumb.  Bauerlein is calling people that go to college and are getting good grades, (like me), dumb that just doesn't make that much sense to me.

  1. Is it better to be "lazy" than "dumb"? :) Just saying...

  2. I agree with you about how Mark Bauerlein is just angry. I just do not believe he understands if anything. I think that we seem lazy in a sense of maybe how many teens do not enjoy being outside as much as they used to. However I know that this does not make us dumb and we are teenagers we can be lazy right now haha : P

  3. I like what our proffesor said above. I don't think it's a good thing that we are lazy (more than past generations I do believe this), but we aren't dumb. Bauerlein needs to learn how to use his words. If that's what he means then I understand a bit more. Against what he IS saying though, we are intelegent. We can just channel it to be more specific. I'm not a whiz in math, but I do know I'm much better at playing the flute. It's a similair story for everyone. If we aren't good at one thing, we are really talented at another.

  4. There are less intelligent people in every generation, so how can he blame the dumb people in our generation on technology? What would we be able to blame on his generation for people being stupid?

@Shannon, I think the term lazy is thrown around too much anymore. Just because our generation has more free time than previous generations makes us lazy by the definition. If it takes me 2 hours to do a paper instead of all day thanks to computers, why should I have to remain productive instead of being able to watch TV or relax?

  5. I could see us maybe being labeled as lazy as well, but rich makes a good point. We have all the technology to make our lives easier, why not take advantage of it? Bauerlein just looks at it as us not wanting to put in the extra work, he doesn't realize we can just get the same amount of work done in half the time.
