Blog #2

I just got done reading the section of Culture Jam that we were supposed to, and all I can think is that Lasn makes people seem like robots that have no emotion and can't think for themselves.  He keeps talking about how many advertisements there are and how we don't even notice them anymore.  I have to agree with that because I personally don't read many advertisements anymore, if I see one I just walk past it not caring about it.  He talked about the Manchurian Consumer, as being people programmed to go out and buy certain things on command, I thought that was pretty funny.  Something I found interesting was the part about the Unofficial History of America.  I never knew that corporations had so much power, and that they were granted the same rights as private citizens.  I thought that whole section was interesting.
For that documentary we had to watch, all I could think about was how pathetic those people were.  That's probably not nice haha, but thats what I was thinking about.  That game was consuming their lives and they were happy about it.  I play video games a good amount, but if I play them for too long I get bored with it so I have to stop, but some of the people in that documentary played that game non-stop for hours.  Also, I thought it was funny that people were getting married to each other after they met each other playing the game.  I think some people in this world are just so weird haha.

  1. Yea I agree with you I dont understand how people can play video games for that long and not get bored. Also people kept saying that the people they games with were like their family and best friends. I just think that's a little nuts I mean you can go out into the real world and make friends. But I couldn't believe that the game made 97 million dollars in one day!

  2. I'm glad you had a strong reaction to the people chosen for the documentary. I don't necessarily think it is not nice to call them pathetic (lol), but I do think it could be valuable to see just how "weird" we are in our own addictions. Perhaps not as extreme, but something we could think about is: facebook, television, music, brand allegiances to products such as the iPod/iPhone. How much time are we "wasting?"

  3. I agree. We shouldn't be playing viedo games that long because it's way too unhealthy for us. It makes us go insane. I do know people who have met someone over those games, but they lived in the same city not across the country!

  4. Yes, I don't get why they played that long. They really don't have a life. I hate playing games, even my favorite ones, for a long period of time. It starts to irk me a lot. I get annoyed and bored by things easily, I guess that's why.

  5. Well that makes at least two people that are capable of playing games but still having normal lives. I enjoy them but if I play too much I feel like I'm wasting my day. I also found the part about the Unofficial history of America interested and how corporations have the same protection under the Bill of Rights as we do.

  6. We basically said the same thing concerning the gamers from Second Skin haha It's pretty pathetic if that is what people are coming to, living their lives through a game.
